Battery life for modern portable devices is always an issue. We simply want more of it. Even if the standard one comes pretty good. So, how can we extend our battery saving in one easy step? Well, here is the answer…
I’ve recently bought an incredible Nexus 7. The main purpose being, among others, to read ebooks almost everywhere I am. At home, on a flight, in a pub… Althought the battery life of this device is absolutley not bad, I think that less recharges can still be a positive plus, specially when power plugs are not easily accessible.
Therefore, I’ve looked in the Play Store for some specific app which can serve the purpose. Of course, my search ended with a long list of candidates. Well, I installed a couple of free apps to give them a try.
What I discovered in these app stats was not totally surprising. Other things being equal (like the screen brightness set to the lowest level), most of the power drain came from the use of my WiFi/Bluetooth connection.
Not surprising at all, but interesting. I wondered if I could get almost the same battery life saving with the already built-in functions in the Android OS.
The short answer is: YES!
Switching to the “Airplane mode”, which disconnects the device from all data connections (3G included if you have one).
As a consequence I removed the apps installed in the first place and now I’m switching to “airplane mode” anytime I do not need a data connetion. Boom! the result is amazing. I’ve almost doubled the battery life with a simple and easy practice with NO additional apps installed on my tablet.
Of course this easy trick can be applied to iOS lovers also.
I’m now searching for a little tiny app which can do the work for me. Enable/disable the “airplane mode” whenever I turn the device screen Off/On. So far, no luck on Android 4.2 but I keep searching.

Personal growth is something everyone should aim to. However is does not happen overnight or accidentally. Rather, it is the result of a well planned effort. And here it is what you can do to improve it.
It often happens to feel we are growing erratically. No specific plans, no vision about what we want to be or what we want to accomplish. As I’ve learned and experienced, growth does not happen overnight but shall be carefully planned and pursued. In short, it is the outcome of a well executed process.
Here are my 6 steps for a faster personal growth:
STEP #1: BE INTENTIONAL
This is the key that opens doors. If you want to develop yourself, you definitely have to be intentional about it. This single step will give you the strength and perseverance to pursue and achieve your targets. No obstacles will stop you.
STEP #2: SET YOUR GOALS
Before starting your journey, focus on the expected outcomes. Beginning with the end in mind is vital. If you know where you are going, every single effort will be set in the right direction. You will avoid waste of time and of other precious resources.
STEP #3: KNOW YOUR BASELINE
Set your starting point. Understand what you already know and, better, what you don’t know. Make a honest self-assessment, it will help your journey.
STEP #4: TRACE YOUR WAY
Identify how to close the gaps that stand between you and your goals. Set clear priorities. Aim for initial quick wins to build confidence. Easy and rewarding tasks come first. Leave complex ones at the end of your to do list. Write down your plan for future reference.
STEP #5: EXECUTE
Do it! Follow your plan and keep schedule tight. Avoid procrastination, avoid failure.
STEP #6: TWEAK AS NECESSARY
Life changes, goals changes. Review and tweak your targets and your plan at scheduled times. Practice the “art of not finishing” if you realize that what you are doing will not take you closer to your goals. Instead, stop and refocus immediately to find alternative ways to move towards our targets.
Although it works “as is” for me, this process can be adapted to fit your needs. Regardless, it can be used as a solid base to build your platform for future growth and positive change.

Book (or ebooks) are still a huge source for information and knowledge. Often, you can easily find many books written on the subject you are interested in. Amazon.com, among other sites, can be a great place to start the search.
On Amazon.com, books are rated by readers which also leave their comments along with a 1 to 5 star rate. Here, you can start with looking at the books which have the highest number of ratings. This means that the books have been read and evaluated by a large number of people. The larger this number, the more reliable is the overall rate of the book. Then you can turn your attention to the books that has the highest number of 5-stars rating. No rocket science until now, right?
Now, here comes the tricky part. If the books are really good, they will have 4 or 5 starts ratings only. However, it often happens that a few readers give them 1 or 2 stars rating. The comments left by those readers can be a tremendous resource to really understand the true value of the book. Detailed and justified critics can bring to your attention details about the book that can really matters and influence your choice on buying it or not. Also, these readers often offer alternatives to the criticized book. This give you the opportunity to explore other sources and know other authors you may have ignored up to now.
If you already follow authors or bloggers on their RSS streams, you may think that following them on Twitter is redundant. Well, it is not.
Authors and bloggers tend to use twitter not only to announce their new posts. They also give away links to articles or other blogs they follow. In short, it means that they give you access to the information that shape their thoughts. This is extremely valuable because:
- It allows you to extend your sources beyond your standard ones
- You can remove other people “filters” on the information and apply your own
- You can deepen your understanding about authors and their writings
I have a neverending appetite for information and knowledge. I hope that this couple of posts can help you to refine your searches, add value to your findings and ultimately improve your knowledge. Good Luck.

There are plenty (almost an infinite number) of resources that you can use to boost your knowledge on a specific topic. Focusing on the right media and content is key to avoid being overwhelmed with useless information
As a young and passionate programmer I was always looking for fresh information to increase my knowledge about the Amiga (do you remember?) hardware structure. However, at that time (around 1985), this task was incredibly time and money consuming.
I read magazines, expensive manuals and I kept mail contact with other guys around Europe who shared my interest.
No wonder, answers to my questions took days or weeks, if not months.
I wish I would have lived that passion today. Now, getting information is no more a problem. It can be free and quick. However, as the amount of available information is immense, the search strategies and filters shall be tuned accordingly.
If you want to take the most out of your search for information and turn it into knowledge, I have some practical tips here:
Today, everything in the quest for information starts with writing a bunch of words in Google and pressing Enter. I know that. But you can get more focused results just adding a simple extension to your search string. Suppose you are looking for any author’s documents on a specific topic.
A search for pdf’s can be easily done by googling: <author name> <topic> filetype:pdf
You can change “pdf” with “doc” or “ppt” to extend the search.
Believe me, results can be surprising. Incidentally, you can find copyrighted ebooks in pdf format. This is illegal of course, but it just happens.
Videos can be enormously helpful to actually watch live presentations or demos about one topic. I usually look on Youtube for leadership gurus and keynotes. Watching them in action is an invaluable supplement to any doc.
I personally recommend the youtube channel “@google talks” which contains lots of videos about presentations on leadership and other interesting topics. See also the subchannels “Authors@google” and “leadership@google”.
Blogs are another excellent resource. Here authors usually talk about their most uptodate thoughts and experiences. Many times however blogs deliver their highest power in the comments section. Good bloggers engage their audience in great discussions which offer multiple points of view on the post topic. These can be even more interesting than the the blog post itself!
